This was my submission for the Batgirl Begins Again project! Whew. I completely forgot about it and had to do it all today, but luckily I already had this random Batgirl redesign that I’d done before but never really fleshed out. I actually…kind of prefer the way it looked in my original sketchy sketch, haha. I seriously cannot draw bats. They look different every time. But I meant it to look narrower and tapering off sooner towards the top, like in the bottom drawing. Just noticed it now, oh well.
Here’s what I wrote in my submission:
"I chose to do Barbara. I happened to be doing some deep thinking on Power Girl’s boob window one day, and my girlfriends and I all agreed that, while boob windows were fun in their own way, exposed backs are way sexier, and I wanted to give Batgirl the impression of wings—the negative space version of her cape. The look I was going for was trendy, fashionable, and feminine—but she’s also a vigilante, so I wanted her costume to be a cross between that and a suit of armor, with her breastplate bearing the crest of the bat. I also wanted to get rid of the utility belt and give her a high-waisted utility skirt, along with a versatile metal cord that can lengthen, retract, or become a rigid staff.”
I feel so bad, everything else I’m seeing in the tag is AMAZING and really well thought out, and I basically one day went, “Hey, I want to make a Bat Dress, lemme draw a Bat Dress.” She also doesn’t have a radically different backstory because I didn’t have time to really think of one. Except she has a bit of a crush on Catwoman. Hence the whip.
